Spiced nectarine slice with coconut oat crumble

2015/01/img_7005.jpg

This is how simple the cooking is in our house! Mix together your own recipe in 10 minutes with what you have in the pantry!! The recipe is very versatile, any plain cake batter you like and add some 5 spice, ground cloves and cinnamon. Poor into a lasagne dish or if you have a long shallow cake tin (something you would cook brownies in) Peel some nectarines and slice them, press them into the batter! Crumble comes after.

But here is my exact recipe, for those who don’t feel confident with making your own batter and crumble.

1 1/2 cup brown sugar
250g butter
4 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
(Whip these ingredients)
Add
2 cups plain flour
2 cups SR. flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp mixed spice
(Mix all together)
Add
1 cup of lemonade
(Yes I insist lemonade)

Poor into your baking dish.

Peel 8-10 nectarines (depending on size) slice them up. Press them in to your batter – you will get your fingers slightly sticky from the batter.

Cook on 180degree fan forced oven for approx 50minutes.

Now to make your crumble:
1 cup of rolled oats
1 cup of dedicated coconut
40g soft butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
Mix together well.

When cake is cooked, but still slightly soft on top place the crumble over the top. Bake for a further 10minutes.

There is this little place in town… that sell’s Amazing burgers – you simply must go!

when you find a cozy spot in the city that sells a pretty awesome burger, why do you need to go any where else??

The Taxpayer

honestly guys, i have now been a couple of times and the stuff here seems pretty amazeballs. the atmosphere plays a big part, but even more so now that we are into the summer months! This neat little bar is set on victoria square and i bet you didnt even know it was there?! it has a large out door seating area right out the front so you can over look the whole of victoria square. But there is also inside dining for those who want to be in that real bar like environment, and order drinks as you please.

The service here is second to none! Really top quality, especially when it comes to topping up your drinks and friendly conversation. The staff are pretty awesome at representing a neat little cafe/restaurant/pub that you are going to want to visit again and again.

a typical aussie style burger that you gotta pick up with your hands and it drips down your arm! YEPPPPP that kinda burger. IMG_2969[1]

This was the Al’ Capone burger with beef patty, smoked mozzarella, pancetta, balsamic Caramalised onions, semi sundried tomatoes with pickled chili

IMG_2967[1] IMG_2970[1]

Brie balls with chili jam! ohhhhh WOW! your gonna love these, just on their own.

If you have the chance to visit here – i highly recommend it. it is certainly one of the top spots in adelaide to visit for a burger bar experience.

The Brighton Espy – Hot or Not??

Seriously this place used to be “the hang out” about 10years ago when it had been newly refurbished and all done up with a fancy cafe and great new pub atmosphere. The bistro area was absolutely awesome complete with built in playground for the littlies as well. Sooooooooooooooo did it hold up to the expectation of 10 years ago??

The food was pretty awesome in the cafe area, but with so much on the same street offering amazing food also – i think it made the good ol’ trusty Espy a few notches below what it used to be.

IMG_3271[1]

This Pie with smashed peas and buttery garlic potatoes was super tasty – and such a huge serve, it was so unfortunate i couldn’t eat it all!!

the potato was probably a little bit grainy, and not silky smooth. the meat in the pie was divine, but the pastry was soggy on the bottom. Mushy peas! whats not to love… only there was sooooo much on the plate, it probably could have been a smaller serve.

IMG_3270[1]

Vegetarian burger
a burger that was just lacking that LOVE that everyone expects to see on the plate made for a 5/10.
The burger patty was pretty tasteless, the beetroot on the burger gave it a nice flavour, but otherwise it was just a carb over load of miss matching, not well seasoned burger. And it’s about time you guys got your selves a few new plates! The plate was marked all over from cuts into the plates and they had dark grey line work from cuts over time. Looked like 1000 meals had been eaten off that plate. chips, were crunchy and good.

IMG_3272[1]

a Kids MEAL!! i’m so serious when i say kids meal! this was a huge serve for a kids meal pizza. and it came with chips on top! it would have been great if this was the size kids meal for my 9 year old, but not for my 5 year old. she only ate one slice of pizza and about 4 chips, the flavour was pretty basic – i suppose thats what most kids want, but in this case it didnt really hit the spot for miss 5.

All in all, i probably wouldnt rush to go back here any time soon. it is lacking a lot of attention to detail, and the staff need a good turn around to make this place as fun and inviting as it used to be. with it now surrounded by amazing cafe’s it would be hard work to keep this place enticing, but it would be such a shame to see this place go further down hill.

Our empty plates sat on our table for over an hour while we sat and chatted after we had finished. not one staff member came to offer us any more drinks, nor did they come past and take away our dirty dishes. the staff were certainly not the typical “great waiting staff” that you would usually expect in a cafe environment.

Paddy’s Lantern – WOW what a statement!

Paddy’s Lantern – Gilbert street Adelaide.

This little tucked away on a busy street cafe, is starting to become a fashion statement in adelaide. It’s fancy tiled bench with quirky interior design, with lots of seating inside and out has already got a strong regular following.

IMG_0810[1]

the food regularly changes to suit whats in season, and they use fresh accessible produce from around adelaide. The staff… WOW the staff are absolutely mind blowingly beautiful. Honest, down to earth, clearly HAPPY to be at work & obviously well looked after. I think i enjoyed the staff’s company more than my own, and wanted to go work behind the counter with them. they are here to make a statement, and that they did!

The picture above is their own take on a waffle. it was not waffle texture, but it was flavoursome. it was almost like a slice of french toast. my daughter absolutely loved it. i’m not sure it would win any awards for being visually “pretty” but it was so delicious, who cares!

IMG_0811[1]

Talk about perfect coffee porn photo right here!! it was beautiful, and made well. I would definitely go back for a good quality coffee.

IMG_0809[1]

then there was this… Although on first impressions of this dish coming out weren’t as great as first thought, it certainly tasted delicious. That potato patty was soooo yum! I think I could have eaten a whole stack of them 😊 Spinach cooked al’dente topped with a fried egg all sitting on a bed of red pepper purée. again not the prettiest of food porn that we have posted. but definitely up there with the best cafe’s in adelaide.

Eire Cafe – Our team is divided! YOU BE THE JUDGE

There has been so much talk about, whats HOT and whats NOT in Adelaide – that there is always a new find just around the corner. so … Introducing:

Eire Cafe – Springbank road, Clapham, Sa

Upon going to this cafe, the team at Eire had known we (Dan & Leia) were coming in on a particular day for breakfast. we had the kids with us also, so it seemed like we almost filled the cafe with 5 people! As soon as we sat down, we decided we needed coffee ASAP! so ordered and it literally appeared before our very eyes. It was outstanding in flavour and honestly so good I stood up and asked what beans they used because it was delicious and made well.

http://instagram.com/p/twnFsPqG3u/?modal=true

Our breakfast was ordered, and we were excited!

http://instagram.com/p/twoM9pKG4v/?modal=true

http://instagram.com/p/twoy0MqG5R/?modal=true

http://instagram.com/p/twqcmIqG6y/?modal=true

now the reason behind our team being divided…

The experience Dan & Leia had was mind blowing with flavour & textures. however remembering the cafe staff were expecting and knew we were going in on a certain day, as it was discussed a few days prior via instagram.

Celeste & Matt couldnt make this breakfast and went on a separate weekend – 2 weeks later. It was so bad, that they had to send back two meals and them be remade. the reasons why, the bacon was dripping in oil and it was so bad that it was dripping onto the plate. the coffee milk was burnt, and over cooked so tasted horrid. they offered no pressed juice or milkshakes, therefore Matt had nothing to drink because he does not drink hot drinks. the eggs were undercooked, there was a mound of avocado almost 2 times the size of the one featured above in the photo of Leia’s. there was certainly no consistency with the chili hint in the avocado or even well seasoned with Celeste’s experience.

NOW you be the JUDGE…
was Eire Cafe really good? or did they know to be outstanding on the occasion they were expecting Dan & Leia?

a hidden GEM? hard to believe i hadnt been

Introducing:

The Bowery Kitchen

IMG_1412[1]

a pretty and unique cafe set up, with a quick walk in “over the counter” food variety, selling pies, sushi, fast salads, healthy alternatives but ultimately fast all ready prepared meals. It comes complete with its very own grocery shop out the back, with a fully functioning cafe “sit down” seating area with a different menu all together. with a front window of cakes and pastry treats along with coffee and pressed juices.

The staff are all very lovely and quick to take your order (even through the mad rush of LUNCH hour was happening) which is always a plus. They have a much bigger variety than first thought. So there is certainly something here for all. It suits different budgets, and vegetarian or vegan. A great place to have a meeting or just a friendly get together. Alcohol is also sold here!

Only downfall was our waitress…. She was off with the fairies the whole time. Stopping mid walk, forgetting what she was doing, forgetting what we ordered. Asking us if everything was ok, more than it was needed (at least 3 times while we were eating) then she wanted to take our plates away when they were not finished. She was a little bit too much to handle on a lunch break. As she seemed confused her self.

the food was very well presented and tasted delicious, i would certainly recommend and go back again. i would love to go back for breakfast.

A little health kick to start your week

If you’ve been following on Facebook and Instagram, you would know that Leia really enjoys the healthy food side. Often prepping meals for the weekly lunches or quick dinners! check out what she’s been up to this week.

IMG_1512[1]

she writes-

Being a busy mum, and running around after three kids i often forget about my self and what i grab for lunch might not always be healthy. But by putting an hour a week aside (usually on a weekend) i seem to be able to mix and match ingredients and also use up some veggies that havent yet been used for the week. This week i have made roast pumpkin, quinoa, fetta, rocket salad with added pepitas and sunflower seeds. pictured above. a Thia/asian slaw with red cabbage, carrot, capsicum, baby spinach, parsley, red onion, and a little bit of left over salad leaves. a mixed quinoa salad with cucumber, snowpeas, capsicum, celery, red onion. Each of these salads were divided up into containers with some left over protein – chicken schnitzel and some pulled pork.

IMG_1511[1] IMG_1510[1]

I was also able to prep some roasted eggplant and leek ready for a vegetarian dish this week.

and made some simple fruit pizza’s for the kids to enjoy over the weekend. a real simple concept where you could add just about anything you have in the fridge to the tops of some watermelon slices.

Simple Roast potatoes! every one loves a good roast potato. so here is my recipe for perfect potatoes every time

IMG_1465[1]

wedge your potatoes, place them in a container or large salad bowl with 2 table spoons of oil, a sprinkle of himilayan rock salt, pepper and what ever herbs and spices you like (just a little bit though) and i always add a couple of crushed & chopped garlic cloves. roast for about 1 hour on 180 degrees.

ENJOY your week guys!

Chocolate, more chocolate & pink sweet treats… can’t go wrong!

If you haven’t discovered heaven on a plate yet, your not going to the right places!

This is Steven Ter Horst Chocolatier on Rundle Street in Adelaide City

IMG_1205[1]

Is there nothing better?? sweet treats, in pretty little pink colours and chocolate?? Ah-Mazing designs, textures, and combinations. Every one will find something they like here.

IMG_1199[1]

with beautiful interior design, that’s been kept simple with slick black lines and black boards. The wooden table tops, polished cement floors and black industrial stools make this cafe/chocolate shop stand out from all the rest on rundle street.

Everything is perfect, including the blocks of delicious chocolate. My favourite – dark chocolate with sour cherry and pistachios. totally Yumalicious!

L’Atelier Gourmand – Wayville

WOW what an impression! this place blew me away the first time i visited. and then made even more of a statement the next half a dozen times i went and even took the family.

Dan the man, seriously thought the platters were amazeballs because of the variety.

coffee is delicious, smooth and is done by a good barista who knows what they are doing when it comes to heating the milk correctly. nothing worse than burnt over cooked milk.

A breakfast fit for two sisters : Great service, friendly and well prepared food with top quality ingredients.

the Market Shed on Holland

hands up, who’s been?!

If you are free one sunday morning, might i suggest you go for not only the freshest produce around town. But also for the best range on organic produce. by far one of Leia’s favourite places to take the family on a sunday morning. Although not always affordable for a whole family of 5 to eat here – consider it a special treat. It is however very affordable if you are a single or couple and just buying breakfast for your self, not a tribe of 5. It’s also not very convenient to get there and all 5 of you decide you want something different from every one else. Its always SUPER busy and some stands/stalls have longer wait than others (obviously this changes week to week)

Seriously an amazing place to go and meet up with your girlfriends and share a bite to eat and a coffee on a sunday morning.

the yummiest burger breakfast would have to be from Veggie Velo

http://instagram.com/p/o-xCg4KG51/

those mushrooms, that haloumi – it all worked so well, and seriously LOOK AT THE SIZE of that thing!! hard to get your lips around it.

then there was the bacon and egg bagel – by olive and edith $9.50 for a bagel and coffee (pretty good value)

http://instagram.com/p/o-yEIGqG6x/

Juice x3 – delicious combinations by Nurished Delish and Nutrish

http://instagram.com/p/o-zUClqG8s/

http://instagram.com/p/o-0f_VqG90/

another perfectly cooked breakfast – toastie with bacon & egg combo topped with rocket by Small Batch

http://instagram.com/p/os1_5SqGxa/

The coffee was pretty good from here too! probably the best tasting and temperature coffee in the whole of the market shed (if i dont say so my self

http://instagram.com/p/or93wIKGwT/

Again i cant stress enough, if you havent been and you live in adelaide – you need to visit on a sunday morning. there is so much to see, and so much to buy or try – you certainly wont be disappointing 🙂
